The Castelli Alpha Doppio Rain or Shine Woman’s Jacket is for the high-performance female cyclist who continues training and racing in cold, rainy weather. Besides protection against sub-freezing, wet weather, the Castelli winter cycling jacket keeps you comfortable when it warms up and rain or snow subside. Although the fabrics are breathable, a double-layer construction allows you to open the outer wind-protection layer for extra ventilation. Castelli understands at the beginning of a ride, a cyclist may need extra warmth, but as temperatures rise and the ride gets faster, a cyclist needs extra ventilation. By opening the outer layer, air circulates to cool a heated body and dry sweat. Cold air won’t go directly against skin. By opening the outer layer, air circulates over the insulating layer, so you have just enough air to keep you comfortable. This is also a great feature on a long climb when you can open for fresh air and then close on the descent with the easy sliding YKK® Vislon® zipper that is also water resistant. The Polartec® Alpha Direct insulating layer is the next generation of insular winter fabric—it’s softer and warmer. Castelli has made more changes to improve one of its top winter jackets. The neck is high and shaped to fit a woman’s body in every bike position. A stretch layer at waist is made with a silicone bead that lies flat and completely seals out wind without pinching or exposing your body. The jacket stays flat and in place. The double-layer wrist opening now has an inner layer that stays under a winter glove. Wet weather protection is designed into every part of the jacket. The GORE-TEX INFINIUM™ WINDSTOPPER® fabric has waterproof seam taping on exposed seams around the shoulder. Other seams are hidden out of direct water flow and the water-repellent fabric treatment keeps out most of the moisture. Castelli calls the Alpha Doppio Rain or Shine Jacket “essentially waterproof.” They had to find the right balance between water protection, breathability, and comfort. In essence, this doesn’t mean no drop will ever get through the jacket, but Castelli tested the jacket in long rides in real rain and the testers stayed dry.
